Drawing, guided by destiny, like the courageous girl from Vilnius in the fairy-tale, with love I go to the obscure, as if forbidden, ever unfolding space of creation, desiring to encounter the puzzling unknown and fathom the reality of being. The eternal pull of obscurity tempts me to go, approach and welcome it, over and over again… Creation is an infinite craving for witnessing the unknowable worlds open up. I cherish the miracles of memory, the reminiscences of my childhood, which blur the borders of time and revive the past world of my early years – the Katryčiai meadow is in bloom, the same skylarks sing, I can wade in the reed-beds of the Nevėžis river and open the doors of long-gone houses… I can return to where light fuses with the worlds of twilight and nightly darkness, when fear embraces and alters things. Whenever I illustrate wonder tales, I feel the recurring engulfing longing for the unbroken world of childhood, where trees, stones and twigs… turn into living creatures, Perkūnas, the god of thunder, rides through the sky, the rainbow leans to drink water from the river, hags lie in wait for an orphan in the rye, while aitvaras, the brownie, really lives in the threshing barn…, in the dark of the night the world changes miraculously, imaginary visions merge with reality. I draw while speaking with nature, thus coming closer to peculiar visions. Composing lines, forms, colours… I become entrapped in the drawing and melt together with the signs, shapes and images emerging on the plane. When drawing illustrations, I am playing the birth of a world of sorts. Birutė Žilytė January 12, 2008
