Annotation
The world-renowned artist Mstislav Valerianovich
Dobuzhinsky (Lithuanian: Mstislavas Dobužinskis) (18751957) is most
known for his accomplishments in scenography (or stage design). During
his lifetime, he designed over forty sets for both operas and plays.
Dobuzhinsky set the foundation for stage design in
Lithuania. Although Dobuzhinskys talents were acknowledged across the
globe in the great operas of Paris, London, Rome, Naples, as well as
Brussels, and even later at New Yorks Metropolitan Opera, his work is
not limited to the stage.
Of noble Lithuanian extraction, the young
Dobuzhinsky spent much of his childhood in Vilnius. Dobuzhinsky painted
and drew cityscapes, which along with his scenography sketches were
exhibited in both Europe and the United States. He was even noted to be
an excellent teacher, having trained Lithuanias most famous stage
designers and painters. In 1924, Dobuzhinsky became a citizen of the
newly independent Republic of Lithuania.
