Leonas
Lagauskas. Spring. 1960. Soft warnish.
Lithuanian Art Museum |
Leonas Lagauskas (1928–2010) in Lithuanian history of
graphics is known as a genius master of drawing and
plate, cherisher of classical etching tradition, author
of the cycle of Vilnius’ multilayered panoramas and
gallery of virtuoso portrait drawings, long-lived
educator, docent of Lithuanian State Art Institute,
professor. He shared his excellence and knowledge of
graphics techniques among his students. A comprehensive
exhibition arranged from the works of art (landscapes,
portraits, sketches) donated to Lithuanian Art Museum by
artist’s family will revive a considerable piece of
Lithuanian history of graphics’ art.
In plates created by artist’s beloved techniques of
etching, lithography and soft varnish one can admire
joyful and optimistic imagery full of history and
present, dreaminess and lyric moods. Plates of Leonas
Lagauskas are specific because of its follow-on of
classical tradition. This is obvious in a particular
modeling of shapes, expressive drawing style. Artist
depicted various perspectives from different hills of
Vilnius recording capital’s townscapes and revealing the
beauty of its architectural and natural surroundings.
His compositions are commonly enlivened with tiny
conversation piece style mise-en-sc`enes. The theme of
Vilnius used to be developed in many compositions of the
artist.
Portraits created during students’ practices in pastel,
carbon, sanguine or simple pencil depict both elite of
science or art and common countrymen. Because of his
investigative and sharp eye the artist was able to
convey the mood of the subject he portrayed vividly and
promptly. He was deeply aware of the particularities of
each of the drawing technique, therefore, in order to
express more intense characterizations of each subject
he used to choose means for it without failing.
The power of his creativity lies in the follow-on of the
classical tradition of metal techniques and the
particularly and delicately modeled form. A free drawing
style and a vitality of works are the long-lived values
which are appreciated regardless the change of
generations, styles of art and tastes of judges.
